Degree of Comparison

Degree of comparison adalah membandingkan antara dua hal atau lebih. Ada tiga cara membandingkannya :

1. Positive degree : menunjukkan persamaan/sebanding antara satu hal dengan hal lain

2. Comparative degree : menunjukkan adanya kelebihan antara satu hal dengan hal lain

3. Superlative degree : menomor-satukan/paling unggul terhadap satu hal diantara yang lain

1. Positive degree

a. Fungsi : menunjukkan persamaan antara satu hal dengan hal lain, tidak untuk menunjukkan kelebihan

antara satu hal dengan lainnya.

b. Gunakan kata penghubung as...as (se...), the same ...as..(sama...nya dengan ...)

c. Examples :

1. Solo is as beautiful as Jogja

2. Sony television is as expensive as Toshiba

3. I have the sam hobby as Febby

4. Those two hotels have the same height

2. Comparative degree

a. Fungsi : menunjukkan adanya kelebihan antara satu hal dengan hal lainnya

b. Gunakan kata penghubung pembanding than...(daripada). Contoh :

- more expensive than...

- taller than...

- bigger than...

c. Tambahkan suffix : -er, pada kata sifat (adjective) yang terdiri dari satu atau dua suku kata. Contoh :

- bigger than...

- taller than...

- older than...

- larger than...

d. Tanbahkan preffix : more- pada kata sifat yang terdiri dari tiga suku kata atau lebih. Contoh :

- more expensive than...

- more beautiful than...

- more wonderful than...

e. Untuk kata keterangan (Adverb of Manner), yang ditandai dengan suffix : -ly, baik yang terdiri dari dua

suku kata atau lebih, tambahkan prefix : more-. Contoh :

- finished the test more quickly than...

- sing more beautifully than...

f. Untuk kata keterangan (Adverb of Manner), yang tidak ditandai dengan suffix : -ly, tambahkan suffix :

-er, apabila hanya terdiri dari satu kata. Contoh :

- works harder than...

- runs faster than...

g. Pengecualian. Untuk kata sifat tertentu, bentuk perubahannya arus dihafal.

- good -> better : lebih baik

- bad -> worse : lebih jelek

- little -> less : lebih sedikit

- crowded -> more crowded : lebih ramai

- tired -> more tired : lebih lelah

- interested -> more interested : lebih tertarik

- confused -> more confused : lebih bingung

h. Ada kata kerja yang secara leksikal telah menunjukkan maka comparative, telah dibahas pada

preferences

3. Superlative degree

a. Fungsi : menomor-satukan/paling unggul sesuatu diatas yang lainnya. Ditandai dengan article the.

b. Berikan suffix : -est pada kata sifat yang terdiri dari satu atau dua suku kata

- ...the cleverest : paling pandai

- ...the biggest : paling besar

- ...the tallest : paling tinggi

c. Untuk kata sifat yang terdiri dari tiga suku kata atau lebih, tambahkan preffix : most..

- ...the most expensive : paling mahal

- ...the most beautiful : paling cantik

- ...the most wonderful : paling menakjubkan

d. Untuk kata keterangan (Adverb of Manner), yang ditandai dengan suffix : -ly, baik yang terdiri dari dua

suku kata atau lebih, tambahkan prefix : most-. Contoh :

- finished the test th most quickly...

- sing the most beautifully..

e. Untuk kata keterangan (Adverb of Manner), yang tidak ditandai dengan suffix : -ly, tambahkan suffix :

-est, apabila hanya terdiri dari satu kata. Contoh :

- works the hardest...

- runs the fastest...

f. Pengecualian. Untuk kata siat tertentu, bentuk perubahannya harus dihafal. Sedangkan untuk kata sifat

yang berakhiran -ed, tambahkan preffix : most meskipun hanya terdiri dari dua suku kata.

- good -> better -> the best

- bad -> worse -> worst

- crowded -> more crowded -> most crowded

- tired -> more tired -> most tired

- satisfied -> more satisfied -> most satisfied

Preference disini menunjukkan adanya comparative, atau biasa kita dengar lebih.....daripada..... Ya gitu deh...

Pada preference, terdapat 2 rumus dasar pada masing - masing preferences nya yaitu kalimat yang hanya menggunakan objek saja dan kalimat yang terdiri dari kata kerja. Rumus - rumusnya adalah sebagai berikut..

1. Prefer....to...

a. Prefer + Noun + to + Noun

Examples :

- I prefer apple to manggo

- I prefer fried chicken to fried fish

b. Prefer + Ving + to Ving

Examples :

- I prefer watching TV to going out on sunday

- I prefer eating popcorn to burger

2. Like.....better than....

a. Like + Noun + better than + Noun

Examples :

- I like laptop better tahn computer

- I like manggo juice better than orange juice

b. Like + Ving + better than + Ving

Examples :

- I like reading comic better than magazine

- Ms. Ann likes wearing suits better than casual clothes

3. Would rather....than...

Would rather + V1 + than + V1

Examples :

- She would rather go to school by pedicap than car

- He would rather stay at home than go out on saturday night

Note : Khusus pada Would rather...than... hanya pada kalimat yang hanya memiliki kata kerja saja..

Examples :

Examples :

5. At the point of and In the point of

a. At the point of (puncak)

Examples :

b. In the point of (hampir)

Examples :

Examples :
